EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
W
hen Ashok came to The Pure Water Company (an affiliate of New Growth Development) looking for work he was functionally illiterate, having only a third grade education. He took a job driving a tricycle-like trolley, but he was very keen to learn how to read. So as part of the employment contract, we agreed to try to teach him to read and write so that he could do other, higher-paying jobs as well. Over the course of the next six months many of the literate workers at the company spent their spare time helping Ashok decode the Hindi script. Ashok used every available moment to practice his reading.
That was four years ago. Now Ashok is skilled at many of the routine jobs at The Pure Water Company, and he reads well. Often he can be heard reading the portion of scripture chosen for the daily devotion or helping a newer employee learn to read. He is also insistent on bringing education to his children as well. Despite the high cost of schooling all three of his children, including his daughter, are enrolled.
Ashok came to us as a man with few skills, but bright ambitions. With just a bit of help and encouragement he is now a valuable employee and an agent of change in his community.
